To commemorate the date Union troops burned the Perry County Courthouse on May 12, 1863 during the first recorded amphibious attack by the U.S. Calvary, Perry County will be host to Civil War Re-Enactor troops who will once again “attempt” to burn down the Courthouse in Linden. The schedule is as follows:

8:00 a.m – registration of troops

10:00 a.m. – Cannon demonstration on Hwy 13 across from Sonic

10:45 a.m.– Speakers County Mayor John Carroll and Sen. Steve McDaniels will make a proclamation of the day’s events, opening ceremony

11:00 a.m. – Ladies Tea at the Commodore Hotel for all ladies in period dress

12:00 noon – Ladies moderated fashion show will be open to everyone’s enjoyment on the Square

2:00 p.m.– The Battle of the Burning of the Perry County Courthouse – bring your camera! The Union troops will enter the town from the west, much as they did back in 1863, and attempt to conquer the Confederate soldiers. Good authority has it that the Confederate troops will be ready for them this time!

Camp life will be depicted around the Courthouse all day, including a medical tent, arms inspections. Assistance with genealogy will be provided by the Sons of the Confederate Veterans for those interested. Troops are coming from all over to participate in this first re-enactment of this event.

Program books will be available free to everyone at the merchants on the square.

Come enjoy the day in Linden, county seat of Perry County.
