Child Mental Health Awareness Day

Date
05-09-2026
Location
Downtown Linden

Description

Child Mental Health Awareness Day was established in 2005 by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) in the United States. It is observed annually on the first Thursday of May to raise awareness and promote the importance of mental health in children and young people. The day was created in response to the growing concern over the number of children struggling with mental health issues and the lack of resources available for their treatment. It is a day to recognize the unique challenges faced by children and young people when it comes to mental health and to promote efforts to improve access to appropriate services and support. Child Mental Health Awareness Day is an important reminder that help and support are available to children and young people who may be struggling with mental health issues. It is also important to remember those who came before us by continuing to advocate for better mental health care for our children, and by promoting awareness and understanding of mental health issues in our communities.

As posted by Ashley Weems on the 9th of May, this day has been proclaimed as an annual observance of Child Mental Health Awareness Day. We have reprinted her Facebook post on our website, and it will appear annually on our calendar so we shall never forget.
